Welcome to Tudhoe Village & The Green Tree 1727.......

Often referred to as "one of the best kept secrets in County Durham " the picturesque Tudhoe Village is a quiet backwater, where upon the village green you’ll find the family run Green Tree Pub & Restaurant, a 280 year old dalestone inn only 4 miles from Durham City.

Step inside and a warm welcome is always assured from your hosts the Hopson family. The extensive menu offers plenty of variety so there’s always something to tempt you, however don’t forget to leave room for our legendary deserts.

Why not try our well kept Caskmark ales or sample our wine list which is well compiled with an eclectic mix of old and new world varietals.

The garden is delightful in summer with fruit trees sheltering the lawn and children’s play area and there are plenty of outside tables under parasol s on our york stone terrace. Should you over indulge it’s a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll around the village or indeed the many local walks.

The Village has an interesting past, the earliest documents to mention Tudhoe Village comes from the reign of King John:. Around 1200 Emma de Bulmer, daughter of the Lord of Brancepeth and widow of Geoffrey de Neville, granted the whole of Tudhoe Village area to Robert fitz Meldred, Lord of Raby, who married Emma's daughter Isabella. This began a long-lasting association between the Village with the Nevilles, who were later to become the richest and most powerful family in the North of England during the 14th and 15th centuries. Since then Scottish Raids, the Black Death, the Rebellion of the North 1569, Resurgencey in Tudor & Stuart Tudhoe, the Civil war 1642-1660 and later the wealthy Salvins of Tudhoe 1665-1756, have all left their mark on the village.

The Green Tree has it's own unique date stone. It bears the date 1727 and the reading JPM or possibly TPM. It is not known for sure who this is, perhaps it could be John Pickering and his wife MP who were residents of the village during this period ?

Thank you for taking time to learn a little about The Green Tree and our lovely Tudhoe Village, we hope to see you soon, but remember we're a best kept secret, careful who you tell !
